The Government of India is observing the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah in September 2026 as a nationwide campaign to strengthen awareness about nutrition, health and caregiving practices. The campaign focuses particularly on pregnant women, lactating mothers, children, adolescents and families, with special attention to the role of Anganwadi Centres.

The 2026 campaign is being launched in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on 9 September. Its central theme is “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari”, which calls for greater community participation and shared ownership of Anganwadi Centres. The campaign highlights dietary diversity, adequate protein intake and the importance of fresh hot cooked meals.
Rashtriya Poshan Maah forms part of the government's wider nutrition strategy under Mission Poshan 2.0. The mission was created by integrating major nutrition-related interventions, including POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anganwadi Services and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls.
POSHAN Abhiyaan was launched in March 2018 as a multi-ministerial convergence mission to place nutrition at the centre of India's development agenda. It uses technology-based monitoring, community mobilisation and behavioural-change approaches to improve nutrition outcomes.
Anganwadi Centres play a central role in India's nutrition and early-childhood development system. They provide supplementary nutrition, support early childhood care and education, conduct growth monitoring and serve as important community-level points for maternal and child health interventions.
Mission Poshan 2.0 and Examination Relevance
For competitive examinations, candidates should remember that Rashtriya Poshan Maah is observed every September. The campaign is associated with the Ministry of Women and Child Development and supports the objectives of Mission Poshan 2.0.
The 2026 theme, “Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari”, is particularly important as a current-affairs fact. Candidates should also remember that the programme emphasises maternal nutrition, infant and young-child feeding practices, dietary diversity, protein-rich nutrition, hygiene and growth monitoring.
Nutrition is treated as a multi-dimensional development issue because malnutrition can affect physical growth, learning outcomes, productivity and long-term human-capital development. Consequently, government nutrition programmes involve convergence among multiple departments and levels of government.
The campaign's emphasis on Anganwadi Centres also reflects the government's effort to strengthen community participation in public nutrition programmes. Instead of viewing nutrition only as a welfare issue, the campaign promotes behavioural change and community responsibility.
Questions in competitive examinations may ask about the year of launch of POSHAN Abhiyaan, the ministry responsible for Mission Poshan 2.0, the month in which Rashtriya Poshan Maah is observed, or the 2026 campaign theme.
Exam Focus: 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah, Mission Poshan 2.0, POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anganwadi Centres, Ministry of Women and Child Development, 2026 theme.
