The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) are conducting the bilateral air exercise Veer Guardian-2026 at Air Force Station Jodhpur from 9 to 22 September 2026. The fourteen-day exercise is designed to improve operational coordination, tactical proficiency and professional interaction between the two air forces.

The Indian Air Force is participating with a combination of frontline aircraft, including the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Su-30MKI and Rafale. Japan is participating with its F-2A fighter aircraft. The participation of these aircraft provides an opportunity for both sides to practise complex air operations and exchange operational knowledge.
The exercise includes mission-planning conferences, subject-matter expert exchanges and professional interaction involving engineering and aerospace safety. These activities are designed not only to improve flying skills but also to strengthen the institutional relationship between the two air forces.
Exercises of this nature are an important component of India's defence diplomacy. They provide participating forces with opportunities to understand each other's operating procedures, improve interoperability and exchange experience in areas such as mission planning, aviation safety and tactical operations.
The exercise is taking place against the background of increasingly close India-Japan strategic relations. Both countries cooperate in several areas, including defence, maritime security, technology, infrastructure and regional stability. Their relationship is also important in the context of the wider Indo-Pacific region.
Why Veer Guardian Is Important for Exams
