A Tableau Built Around a National Song's Legacy
The Ministry of Culture achieved a double honour at the Republic Day Parade 2026: its tableau titled "Vande Mataram – 150 Years Journey" won the First Prize for Best Tableau among central ministries and departments, while its accompanying cultural presentation, "Vande Mataram: The Eternal Resonance of Bharat", received the Special Prize for artistic and thematic excellence.
Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Vivek Agarwal, noted that Republic Day tableaux function as "moving archives of the nation's civilisational memory," translating historical experience into shared visual language year after year.
The tableau traced the 150-year journey of the national song from its origins on the lips of revolutionaries during the freedom struggle to its enduring role in shaping India's collective consciousness today.
A Collaborative Cultural Production
The award-winning cultural dance presentation was curated by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Centre, bringing together performers to stage a large-scale artistic tribute to the song.
For the past six years, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) has been responsible for conceptualising and executing the Ministry of Culture's Republic Day tableau, and this year's entry was designed to integrate multiple cultural dimensions rather than focus on a single scheme or achievement, distinguishing it from tableaux presented by other ministries and states.
The moving tableau notably carried a replica of the original manuscript of Vande Mataram, anchoring the visual narrative in a tangible historical artefact.
