India Advances Next Generation Launch Vehicle and Reusable Rocket Technology

The Government has approved the development of India's Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), which will be capable of carrying a maximum payload of 30 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) — a substantial leap over ISRO's current heavy-lift capability. Alongside this, ISRO is working on a partially reusable variant of the NGLV with a 14-tonne LEO payload capacity, aimed at bringing down the cost of access to space.

Building a Heavier, Cheaper Route to Orbit

A key innovation under development is a winged-body upper stage that can autonomously glide back from orbit and land on a runway, mirroring reusable-launch concepts pioneered internationally but engineered to India's specific mission requirements. These efforts are being steered as part of India's expanding space vision, which includes ambitions for a future space station and deeper interplanetary missions.

Private Sector and Commercial Space Growth

As of January 31, 2026, IN-SPACe, the government body promoting private participation in the space sector, had facilitated 71 ISRO technology transfers to industry players and start-ups, reflecting the rapid opening up of India's space ecosystem to private enterprise. This is complemented by strong commercial growth at NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the PSU arm of ISRO, whose revenues rose from ₹321.77 crore in FY 2021-22 to ₹3,246.09 crore in FY 2024-25, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26. 

Together, the NGLV programme and the growing technology-transfer pipeline through IN-SPACe indicate a two-track strategy: strengthening India's own launch capability while simultaneously building a competitive private space industry capable of manufacturing satellites, components, and eventually launch vehicles domestically. 

This aligns with the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision extended to the space sector, positioning India to compete more effectively in the global commercial launch market currently dominated by players such as SpaceX.

Aspirants should note the NGLV's 30-tonne LEO capacity, its 14-tonne reusable variant, and the 71 technology transfers via IN-SPACe as likely factual pegs in prelims-style science and technology questions.
