DRDO Achieves Hypersonic Milestone with Long-Duration Scramjet Test

Indian Defense News – Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a major milestone in India’s indigenous hypersonic weapons programme in January 2026. The Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad, successfully conducted a long-duration ground test of a full-scale actively cooled scramjet combustor on 9 January 2026.

A Landmark Ground Test for Hypersonic Propulsion

The test was conducted at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) Facility and the combustor operated for more than 12 minutes. The achievement follows an earlier sub-scale test carried out in April 2025 and represents an important step towards developing advanced propulsion technology for India's future hypersonic cruise missiles.

A scramjet (supersonic combustion ramjet) is an air-breathing engine that compresses incoming air using the vehicle's own forward speed rather than a mechanical compressor, allowing it to operate efficiently at hypersonic speeds — generally above Mach 5. Sustaining active combustion for over 12 minutes without engine failure or thermal damage is considered a major technical achievement, since scramjet combustors face extreme heat loads that make prolonged, stable operation exceptionally difficult to engineer.

The successful test is significant because developing a reliable propulsion system is one of the most challenging aspects of building operational hypersonic missiles. The test validated the design of the advanced combustor as well as the capabilities of the specialised SCPT facility.

The combustor and test facility were developed by DRDL with support from Indian industry partners. The achievement therefore also reflects the growing role of domestic industry in India's defence research and development ecosystem.

Strategic Significance for India's Missile Programme

This test builds directly on India's 2024 milestone of testing its first long-range hypersonic missile, capable of carrying conventional and nuclear payloads over 1,500 km at speeds of roughly 3 km per second. To support continued research in this domain, DRDO has also established a new Hypersonic Wind Tunnel in Hyderabad, which will be used to simulate high-speed flight conditions for future missile systems. 

Mastery of scramjet propulsion places India among a very small group of nations — alongside the United States, Russia, and China — capable of developing indigenous air-breathing hypersonic weapons. Such technology is central to next-generation long-range missile systems that can defeat conventional missile-defence shields due to their speed and manoeuvrability. 

The test is part of DRDO's broader Foundation Day roadmap for 2026, which places renewed emphasis on next-generation propulsion, cyber security, and space technologies as strategic priorities for India's defence self-reliance mission.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, industry partners and academia, describing the achievement as a strong foundation for the country's Hypersonic Cruise Missile Development Programme.
