A Hub of Diplomatic Activity Beyond the Summit Agenda
Beyond its formal sessions, the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi became a platform for a dense schedule of bilateral engagements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On February 20, 2026, PM Modi held a roundtable with CEOs of leading AI companies in New Delhi, and separately met Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, to discuss deeper collaboration on artificial intelligence between India and global technology firms.
The same day, PM Modi also met the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, using the summit's international footfall as an opportunity for a bilateral conversation on regional cooperation without a separate standalone state visit.
Corporate Diplomacy Alongside State Diplomacy
On the sidelines of the summit, technology companies G42 (UAE) and Credo AI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reflecting how the summit functioned simultaneously as a venue for government-to-government diplomacy and company-to-company partnership building.
This pattern — using a large multilateral summit as a venue for a cluster of bilateral and corporate meetings rather than a single-purpose event — has become increasingly common in Indian diplomacy, allowing the government to maximise the diplomatic return from hosting a major international gathering.
The presence of over 100 country delegations at a single New Delhi venue across five days made it one of the most diplomatically dense weeks in India's recent calendar, coming immediately after President Macron's state visit concluded on February 19.
