President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated 88th Mahamastakabhisheka of Lord Mahamastakabhisheka Gomateshwara by unveiling an idol of Bahubali at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district, Karnataka. He also lighted a lamp to mark the inauguration of the mega event, held once in 12 years.

Key Points: Mahamastakabhisheka 

  1. Mahamasthakabhisheka is the head anointing ceremony is performed once in 12 years of 57 feet tall monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali Gommateshwara at Shravanabelagola. It is one of biggest festivals for Jain community and it honors Lord Bahubali, a revered Jain icon.
  2. Bahubali is also called Gommateshwara because of Gommateshwara statue.The Gomateshwara statue represents the rich heritage of the country with regard to art and sculpture.
  3. Gommateshwara statue was built by Ganga dynasty minister and commander Chavundaraya in around 981 AD. It is a 57-foot monolith, making it one of largest free-standing statues in world.
  4. President Ram Nath Kovind stated”“This is an important place representing the country’s culture and heritage. It has been spreading the message of love, peace and non-violence to the globe.”
  5. Many dignitaries including Karnataka Governor Vajubha Vala, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swami, Acharya Vardhamana Sagar, a Jain saint, and Veerendra Heggade of Dharmastala, were present on the inaugration ceremony.

  • Shravanabelagola is a town which is located near Channarayapatna of Hassan district in the Indian state of Karnataka and is 144 km from Bangalore, the capital of the state.
  • The Gommateshwara Bahubali statue which is at located Shravanabelagola is one of the most important tirthas (pilgrimage destinations) in Jainism, one that reached a peak in architectural and sculptural activity under the patronage of Western Ganga dynasty of Talakad.
  • Chandragupta Maurya is said to have died here in 298 BCE after he became a Jain monk and assumed an ascetic life style.

  1. PM Modi conferred ‘Grand Collar of the State of Palestine’ by President Mahmoud Abbas on his official visit to Palestine. Prime Minister Modi will hold meetings and exchange agreements with ministers in Ramallah in the West Bank.
  2. Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in Ramallah, making him the first-ever Indian prime minister to visit Palestine. Modi, who is on a four-nation regional trip, was in Jordan on Friday.
  3. The grand collar is highest order given to foreign dignitaries – Kings, Heads of State/Government and persons of similar rank. It has in the past been awarded to King Salman of Saudi Arabia, King Hamad of Bahrain, President Xi Jinping of China, amongst others.

India–Palestine relations

Indo and Palestine relations have been largely influenced by the independence struggle against British colonialism which involves India recognizing Palestine’s statehood following declaration on 18 November 1988 . Although relations between India and Palestine were first established in 1974.

After India finally achieved its independence in year 1947, the country has moved to support Palestinian self-determination following the partition of British India.
