Britain’s Prince Charles has launched a new 10-million-dollar Development Impact Development Impact BondBond (DIB) to help improve education for over 200,000 children in India. The DIB or Development Impact Bond is the largest bond of its type in South Asia. Education impact bond is the latest fundraising initiative by British Asian Trust (BAT) set up by royal 10 years ago to fight poverty in South Asia.

AboutDevelopment Impact Bond(DIB)

Development Impact Bond(DIB)  is intended as result-oriented way to attract new capital into development projects, with strong emphasis on data and evidence. It is intended to improve literacy and numeracy learning levels for primary school students from marginalised communities in country.

 Development Impact Bond (DIB) is a pioneering new way to encourage private investors to fund international development projects that is 100% focused on the outcomes achieved. It aims to help improve education for 18,000 children in Rajasthan, India.

Key Points:

  1. Britain’s Prince Charles has launched a new 10-million-dollar Development Impact Bond (DIB) as these bonds are innovative and also  a tremendously effective way of raising the funds needed to address some of the greatest challenges in the region at the kind of scale necessary to make a significant difference.
  2.  The DIB was announced on occasion of celebration of 10th anniversary of British Asian Trust (BAT) and was launched by trust with support of UK government’s Department for International Development (DfID), Comic Relief, Mittal Foundation and UBS Optimus Foundation.
  3. The DIB or Development Impact Bond  will provide funding to local not-for-profit delivery partners in India over 4 years period to deliver range of operational models including principal and teacher training, direct school management, and supplementary programme.
  4. The objective of the DIB  or Development Impact Bond is to reduce the gender gap in education in Rural India by getting girls into school and learning. Development impact Bond aims to create a ‘proof of concept’, showing potential donors and investors how DIBs could contribute to societal gains.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) launched National National Deworming InitiativeDeworming Initiative on the occasion of National Deworming Day (observed on 10 February).It aims to reach more than 32.2 crore children aged between 1 to 19 years to combat parasitic worm infections. According to the 2012 report ‘Children in India’, published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, 48% of children under the age of 5 years are stunted and 19.8% are wasted, indicating that half of the country’s children are malnourished.

This year it is fourth edition of National Deworming Day after it was launched in 2015. National Deworming Initiative was launched by the Health Minister Shri J P  Nadda.

 National Deworming Initiative

The National Deworming Day is a single fixed-day approach to treating intestinal worm infections in all children aged 1- 19 years and is held on 10 February and 10 August each year which aims to conduct mass deworming program to mobilize health personnel,to prioritize investment in control of Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH)  infections—one of the most common infections.

Key Points : Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH)
These infections are spread through oral or skin contact with contaminated human faeces. They are most common in warm, moist climates with poor sanitation.
Most people don’t have any symptoms.  Symptoms may include stomach pain, diarrhoea and rectal prolapse. Malnutrition can develop. Children with these infections may also have mental and physical growth impairments. Soil-transmitted helminthiases is treated with antiparasitic drugs.

  1. Parasitic worms or Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) are most common infections causing parasitic infestation with nutrient uptake in small children.
  2. Parasitic worms or Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) cause complications resulting in anaemia, malnutrition and improper mental and physical developments in children.
  3. National Deworming Day aims to create mass awareness about the most effective and low-cost STH treatment.
  4. School-based mass deworming program is safe, cost-effective.quickly and can reach millions of children quickly. Deworming has been shown to reduce absenteeism in schools; improve health, nutritional, and learning outcomes.
