(We are writing this series in response to a suggestion made to us. Tell us more about what you want to read here.)

Every year lakhs of candidates appear for the Civil Services Exam. The exam offers a chance to join All India Services like IAS, IPS, IFS and many other Central Services.

More than three lakh candidates appear for the exam every year and only a few hundreds are selected.

Important highlights of Civil Services Exam 2008 are:

A total number of 3,18,843 candidates applied for this examination. 1,67,035 candidates appeared for the Preliminary examination. 11,849 candidates qualified for the Main written examination held in October-November, 2008. 2140 candidates were selected for the Personality Test conducted in March-April, 2009. The successful candidates include 625 male and 166 female candidates.

The pass percentage works our to 0.0025.  Half the candidates of those who apply drop out of the race even before appearing for preliminary examination.
