Passengers will soon be able to surf Internet in trains without using data card as per a new approval by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).Space agency ISRO has allowed the Indian Railways to use the frequency from KU band for using the satellite for Internet surfing inside trains.
The proposal for providing Internet facility inside trains through satellite was brought up two years ago by the Railways, and was waiting for the ISRO clearance.Under the proposal, Internet facility will be provided in Howrah Rajdhani coaches on a pilot basis by uplinking them with satellite.
The Railways plans not to charge passengers to avail the Internet facility as it is a pilot project, for which an amount of Rs 6.30 crore has been sanctioned by the Railways. As part of the project, the locomotives of the train and coaches will be installed with custom-made antenna to connect them to Internet through Wi-Fi.
Passengers will have to dial a number provided by the TTE to get a password in their mobile phones in order to avail the Internet service inside the train.
