  • Nobel prize-winning Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk realises a long-nurtured dream on April 28 with the opening of an actual ‘Museumof Innocence’ – a collection of relics of a half-century of ordinary life – as depicted in his 2008 novel of the same name.
  • A five-day national tribal festival, showcasing the country’s rich tribal culture and traditions, will get under way in Wayanad district in Kerala on April 30. Festival “Gothrayanam” will see participation of around 500 tribal artists, artisans and delegates from all states.
  • The integrated security scheme (ISS), aimed at strengthening vigil in railway stations in the wake of 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is expected to be commissioned in 14 major stations in Southern Railway by July. The surveillance cameras–based ISS would be put in place in ten railway stations in Tamil Nadu, three in Kerala and one in Karnataka and hopefully it would be ready by July.
  • A troupe of sixteen children, most of them from slums, would be touring the United Statesfrom the next month with the mission to spread Mahatma Gandhi’s message of `Ekatva’ (oneness) through a dance-drama. Groomed by noted danseuse Mallika Sarabhai, the troupe is scheduled to give performances of the show `Ekatva’ in Chicago, Houston, New Jersey, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta and Montclair.
  • The Maoists released the 37-year-old tribal legislator of the ruling Biju Janata Dal on the outskirts of Balipeta village in Koraput district on April 26, as per the decision taken earlier by a people’s court.
  • Veteran actress Zohra Sehgal, the grand old lady of Indian cinema whose spirited performance in many a film and stage production has entertained audiences during the past seven decades, is turning 100 on April 27.
  • TheUS economy grew at a slower pace than expected at 2.2 per cent in the first three months of 2012 mainly due to fall in business spending. The world’s largest economy, witnessing relatively slower recovery, had expanded 3 per cent in 2011 December quarter.
  •  A Mangalore college has banned women students from wearing the burqa in classrooms, laying down the law in its prospectus. The diktat that is likely to trigger a debate criss-crossing gender and sectarian lines, was meant for undergraduate courses at the St Aloysius Pre-University College.
  • About 40% of teenagers here are confused about their career options. This revelation came during a nine-month survey conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) among 4,000 students of 44-odd schools.
  • As many as 50 Indian companies participated in the exposition showcasing their profile in building materials, construction equipment and technologies, electrical and sanitary fittings, flooring and roofing material landscaping, consultancy, property development, financial service for construction.India-Sri Lanka bilateral trade has increased by over 65% last year to reach close to US$ 5 billion.
  •  India will host the 46th Annual Meeting the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in May next year which is expected to be attended by 4,000 delegates from across 67 countries. The meeting will be held at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida, near here.
